The new Mk.6 mains conditioner was in action at the Bristol Sound and Vision show and helped Neat Acoustics win the BFA Best Stereo Demonstration award. Mains or hi-fi upgrade?

If you are looking for increased listening pleasure, one of the key questions to address is whether it is more cost effective to invest in better equipment or to ensure that the equipment you have is working to its full potential.

It is impossible to give definitive advice since there are so many factors at play. The quality of mains supply is one of these factors and it can have a big impact on the results that are achieved. It is also very important to pay attention to the correct installation and positioning of the equipment and to address any issues you may have with room and speaker interaction.

Assuming that any obvious set-up issues have been dealt with and you are still not happy with the performance of your equipment, your options are to live with it or to change it.

So how do you decide whether to upgrade the equipment you have or put a James Audio power conditioner to the test? As a common-sense rule, you will always reap the greatest benefit from addressing the most limiting factor.

As a generalisation, the impact of mains noise becomes more apparent as the quality (i.e. sensitivity) of the equipment improves. If you are using budget equipment, then in all but the most extreme circumstances, we would recommend that you check out equipment upgrades first. If you have made a significant investment in quality equipment, the use of a power conditioner becomes a more sensible option.
